Sven and Marcel Paufler have qualified for the World Championships in Canoe Marathon from September 7 to 10, 2017 in South Africa after a successful season in the kayak double! We are very happy about that. Before their departure, the 19 and 22 years young brothers from Bremen invited to the press conference at their club, Störtebeker Bremer Paddelsport, to tell about their way to the World Championships and their current preparations. On Monday evening, the two Bremen students and exceptional canoeists flew from Munich to Pietermaritzburg, on the east coast of South Africa, together with 20 other athletes of the German national team and their coaches. There they will start on Sunday, September 10 in the two-man kayak. "It's nice to be able to race on the course of the reigning world champions," explained Marcel Paufler.
After the brothers had competed together for the first time at the World and European Championships last year, they were able to prove this year that the surprising results were no coincidence. Equipped with a new sponsor and a new canoe from Bremen-based Consensus Steuerberatungsgesellschaft, they once again succeeded in qualifying for the World Championships. This year, the two set their sights higher: "The first five boats of the 20-strong field of participants will be crewed by professional athletes," Marcel explains. "Placing ourselves immediately behind them is our goal. And who knows, with a bit of luck, of course, we'd like to be even further ahead." The chances are not bad. After all, the brothers finished eighth at the first attempt at their World Cup debut in Brandenburg in Germany last year.
They have now been in intensive preparation for the World Championships for three weeks. "We've been working on our start and sprinting in particular," says Sven. The two saw room for improvement there recently, but otherwise the brothers harmonize perfectly. Since they got into the canoe together for the first time in 2016, the canoe pros have continuously improved. 19-year-old Sven and Marcel, who is three years older, are the youngest competitors in the men's race. "So we still have goals for the upcoming World Championships," the two smile.
Sponsor and tax consultant Peter Rasch and the entire team at Consensus Steuerberatungsgesellschaft an der Contrescarpe are now looking forward to the race on Sunday. "We are very pleased that we could support the Paufler brothers on their way with professional equipment and now keep our fingers crossed for the highlight."
